I woke up this morning and realized that we don't have any proper arrangement to prepare traditional Sri Lankan New Year meal at home. I stil wanted to feel festive so instead, opted to celebrate it in Japanese way.
Big Fortune Tea is drunk in Japan on New Year's day ( January 1st in this case) as the first tea of the year, believed to bring you a good luck. Inside the cup are green tea, a hand-tied seaweed and a pickled plum and I also added a salt preserved Sakura, Cherry blossom.

本日はスリランカの元旦です。けれどわが家にはスリランカ式に新年を迎えるお支度が何もなく...
それでも何かお正月らしいこともしたい気もするので、日本の「大福茶」（おおぶくちゃ）を淹れてみました。ピンボケ写真でごめんなさい。
関西では、お正月に緑茶に梅干や結び昆布を入れたお茶を飲むのが習わしなのだそうです。
その昔、村上天皇の時代（951年）頃に、都で流行っていた疫病退散を祈願して、梅干と結び昆布を入れたお茶を病人達に飲ませたところ、徐々に病気が治まったそうです。それ以降天皇が元旦にこのお茶を服されるようになったことから「皇服茶」と呼ばれ、そして庶民の間で幸せをもたらす縁起の良いお茶として「大福茶」として広まったといわれています。
今日は梅干と結び昆布のほかにも、丁度あった桜の塩漬けも入れてみました。
ほんのり塩気と桜の香りが漂う優しい味で、朝からほのぼのとしてきて、今年もいい年が迎えられそうだね、二回目でも三回でもお正月が来てほしいね、なんてよくばっちゃいそうでした。
本当に１月も４月も、二回もお正月が迎えられるとなると、先の元旦でし忘れたことも今回出来れば帳消しになりそうで、とってもお得な気分です。

Iced Tea Variation - Green Paradise Iced Tea

I would love you to try this refreshing fruity Green Iced tea recipe.
It is best to make it with our Green Paradise tea so that aroma is significant, but you could also try it with any Green tea you have.
If you haven't tried Iced Green tea before, you will be surprised to find how better green tea tastes with fruity flavors.



* Recipe for 4 glasses *
1. Pour freshly boiled water into empty cups or jar( not a tea pot you are using). Wait water temperature to drop to around 185 F (85 C)in 2 minutes.
2. Add 2 tea spoons of Green Paradise ( or any green tea) into the tea pot
3. Pour the hot water (400CC) in to the pot and steep it for 5-10 minutes.
4. Add 3 tea spoons of sugar
5. Filled the Pyrex with ice cubes up to 2/3, and set the tea strainer on top of it. Pour the hot tea on to the strainer. Once the last drop is poured, immediately remove all the remaining ice cubes from the tea and keep it in the room temperature.
6. Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the tea and float orange slices and mint leaves.

A little technique to make Green Tea tastes better ...
Do not use hot boiling water !If you do, it just over cooks delicate green tea leaves and it discolors the liquid.

日本人の感覚だと「緑茶とフルーツ！？」と思われるかもしれませんが、これがアイスティーにすると、緑茶のフレッシュ感がフルーツと絶妙に合うのでオススメです！
そして、ちょっとお茶を甘くするのがポイントです。「緑茶に砂糖！？」とまたまた思われてしまいそうですが、ここはぜひ騙されて！？固定観念をはずして試してみてください。
特にグラスを色々と変えてみると、見た目も華やかになり、また実際、容器で味わいもだいぶ変わります。
一人の時もみんなと一緒の時も、ぜひお手持ちのグラスを色々使って、お茶の時間を楽しく演出なさってみて下さい♪


Sri Lankan New Year
It has been incredibly hot in Colombo these days. As Sinhala New Year( Sri Lankan New Year) is on the 14th, ( Yes, we celebrate TWO New Years a year), a lot of people have already taken holidays to escape from the steamy city to cooler parts of the island or even abroad.

We also close our tea salon from 14th -18th April and will open again on 19th.

HELP FOR JAPAN & New Guide Book

We have　installed a donation box in our shop for supporting people affected by Japan's earthquake and tsunami.
All funds received will be sent to the NGO called Save the Children in Japan.
Save the Children has worked in Japan to launch longer-term recovery for children affected by Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami. They have opened the first child-friendly space in Japan, protective environments where children can gather to play and share their experiences under the supervision of trained, caring adults.
We heartily appreciate your kind offer of support.
